Provides participants with an understanding of the various aspects and issues relating to federal immigration law.

TOPIC: The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an understanding of the various aspects and issues relating to federal immigration law.

An effective application of immigration law requires comprehensive knowledge of current policies, federal statutes, and professional practices in accordance with evolving legal frameworks.

This class delivers useful information for understanding federal immigration authorities, and defining the roles of various criminal justice agencies when handling immigration-related matters.

Concepts such as federal immigration enforcement priorities, state versus federal jurisdictional boundaries, the impact of recent court decisions on immigration enforcement, proper documentation procedures, humanitarian considerations, and best practices for inter-agency cooperation will all be discussed.

After taking this training, participants will be able to:

  • Employ a systematic method to verify immigration status and documentation in accordance with legal requirements
  • Understand the critical distinction between federal and state authority in immigration enforcement
  • Understand the procedural differences between administrative immigration violations and criminal offenses
  • Assess the impact of recent federal policy changes on local law enforcement practices
  • Understand sanctuary policies, detainer requests, and their implications for local agencies
  • Understand different categories of immigration status and their significance to criminal justice processes
  • Learn about recent legal decisions affecting immigration enforcement at both federal and state levels

TARGET AUDIENCE: All members of the criminal justice and legal communities.

INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Ricci has been a practicing attorney in the State of Florida for over 24 years and has extensive experience in immigration law with a focus on complex litigation and administrative immigration issues. She specializes in complex immigration issues before the Board of Immigration Appeals and Federal Courts.

In addition, she has served as an Adjunct Professor at Florida State University College of Law teaching “Immigration Law” to law students, at Barry University teaching “Immigration Law and Policy,” “Administrative Law and Process,” and “Legal Writing” to undergraduates. She has also taught Continuing Judicial Education and Continuing Legal Education courses to judges and attorneys.

Ms. Ricci has presented extensively on immigration law topics, having lectured for organizations including the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Federalist Society, multiple universities, and numerous community organizations.
