TOPIC:
The role of a law enforcement supervisor is one of the most challenging—and most important—positions within an agency. Supervisors juggle multiple responsibilities every day, often without the benefit of formal training on how to lead, manage, and mentor their teams effectively. This 8-hour, in-person course bridges that gap by providing practical instruction, open discussion, and proven techniques to help both new and seasoned supervisors succeed with confidence.
Through guided training and real-world examples, participants will explore the many “hats” supervisors wear, from managing personnel to ensuring policy compliance. The course emphasizes the importance of communication, ethical leadership, and proper documentation in building strong teams and protecting both employees and the agency. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in mentoring-style discussions, sharing challenges and solutions with peers who understand the realities of supervisory work in law enforcement.
Key areas of instruction include:
- Understanding policies, procedures, case law, and statutes relevant to supervision.
- Conducting effective performance reviews, including evaluations of reports, camera footage, and field activity.
- Managing a variety of employee issues—injuries, accidents, misconduct, difficult personalities, and recognition of outstanding performance.
- Strengthening communication skills across all levels: with staff, the public, and up the chain of command.
- Applying progressive discipline and documenting effectively to protect both the supervisor and the agency.
- Leading ethically and confidently in day-to-day operations and during critical incidents.
By the end of the course, participants will walk away with practical tools and strategies to manage their shifts and units more effectively, to handle supervisory challenges with confidence, and to foster a professional and ethical work environment.
