Correctional Officers have one of the toughest jobs in law enforcement!

TOPIC:

Correctional Officers have one of the toughest jobs in law enforcement.

With the known dangers, low pay, long hours, stress and trauma, it is becoming difficult to hire and retain officers. Stress can have significant negative consequences for correctional officers as it affects their health and well-being, work performance, and their personal life. According to research these consequences can decrease the safety of a correctional environment, create a liability for the agency, causes a high staff turnover, creates poor performance, lawsuits and reduces the legitimacy of an organization in the eyes of the employees.

Correctional Officers are surrounded by many temptations within the correctional facility. For some officers, those temptations turn into ethical dilemmas and officers decide to make poor choices affecting their career, their family and their life. Officers also face a number of stressors that are directly tied to the inmates they supervise. Perhaps the most serious of these stressors involves the threat of violence, injury and death. They must deal with other forms of inmate criminality and deviant behavior that can include gang activity, dangerous contraband, inmate on inmate violence and health related issues.
