Course Objective

This course assists participants in learning to transition into the role of an investigator.


Course Description

This course is designed to assist patrol officers to transition from the position of road patrol officer into the role of an investigator.

Transitioning from the road into the role of an investigator is both difficult and challenging for law enforcement officers. Most law enforcement officer enter the world of investigation untrained and unprepared for their new position. It can take a new investigator six months to a year before they are trained properly. This instruction will give your patrol officer and/or new investigator the advantage and training needed to investigate all type of crimes with confidence.

The purpose of this class is to assist participants in learning to transition into the role of an investigator. Participants will learn proper techniques in the areas of case building, organization, managing caseloads, investigative tools, interviewing of victims and suspects, search warrants, arrest warrants, and subpoenas. Participants will gain knowledge in the areas of case reports, elements of crimes and establishing proper probable cause. Participants with establish the knowledge and confidence to investigate specific cases.


Subjects Covered

  • This interactive 8 hour class will help participants transition into the role of an investigator.
  • Students will review and learn new tools for investigating cases in a simple 6 step program.
  • Learn skills for building a proper case.
  • Learn to manage a case load.
  • Discuss and learn different investigative tools.
  • Learn proper interview techniques for interviewing victims and suspects.
  • Discuss probable cause.
  • This class will review different Statutes and laws related to specific types crimes.
  • Discuss elements of different property crimes
  • Discuss elements of Person Crimes
  • Discuss elements of Financial Crimes
  • Students will go over writing and issuing subpoenas.
  • Student will learn how to write a proper case report as an investigator.
  • Students will learn and write search warrants.
  • Students will learn and write an arrest warrant.
  • There will be discussion and instructions on building a strong case.
  • Students will be given techniques on working cases with confidence.
