TOPIC:
This class is focused on identifying the differences in the roles of leader and manager; understanding the role of supervisor as a manager and how personality style affects this role. During this class some of the topics discussed will include:
1. Define leadership.
2. Define management.
3. Describe how management and leadership differ.
4. Define the management process.
5. Identify traits of an effective manager.
6. Identify traits of an effective leader.
7. Discuss what is poor leadership and the consequences
8. Discuss what is poor management and the consequences
7. Describe the relationships between top, middle, and first-line management.
8. Explain the supervisor’s role in meeting organizational objectives.
9. Demonstrate organizational management skills.
This class will also discuss why supervisors focus too much time on the bottom 10% of the people they supervisors and not enough time developing others. We will have group discussions and break out group exercises discussing the great managers and leaders they have worked with. Maybe more importantly the poor managers and leaders they have worked with.
We will also spend some time discussing the most common mistakes made by new and even seasoned supervisors and how to correct them. We will also spend time discussing how and when to motivate employees.
This class is a must for new supervisors, seasoned supervisors and anyone interested in becoming a supervisor. This class is not limited to sworn officers.Non-sworn, communications and administrative personnel will also benefit from this class.Leadership is leadership. TARGET AUDIENCE: All members of the criminal justice and legal community (sworn or non-sworn). Training is especially valuable for supervisors, command staff members, agency heads, and anyone aspiring to become a leader.
